I love John Daly. So I bought this book.
This book is obviously thoroughly researched and is very enjoyable in places too. But its obvious there were times when the author did not have access to the right people to get the full story. What really happened on the course in Canada when Daly got the shakes and started crying, for instance? When exactly did he stop taking the anti-depressants he had been given and what went on when he was dumping Shanae Chandler for Sherrie Miller? These incidents are mentioned but all too briefly I thought. There are also a couple of times when the author shows he is not a golf writer (Bob Estes is certainly not the only guy on the PGA Tour who doesnt wear a glove. What about Fred Couples and Lee Janzen?) and a quadruple bogey on a par four (1st at Pebble Beach) is an eight not a nine.
But thats being overly picky. Okay I might have wanted to know a bit more in certain places but on the whole I thought the book was excellent. There really is a John Whats he gone and done now Daly story on virtually every page.

Dilly Daly
Not usually being a fan of golf or biographies I couldnt resist being tempted by this book. Daly clearly has a story to tell and Newsham certainly hasnt held back. Obviously thoroughly researched, though Im not sure if he got the Carl Spackler muttering from Caddyshack absolutely correct. That aside, I believe everything else in it, innit.

A good read with a few minor flaws
Feinstein has compiled another entertaining and insightful account of a golfing year. His use of premiary quotes and anecdotes eluminate the reader as successfully as the excellent A Good Walk Spoiled . My one criticism is that Feinstein seems to lay far greater emphasis on the superstars of the game, apart from the chapters on Steve Stricker, who, lets face it, is almost a superstar. The concentation on the OMeeras, Couples and Woods of this world detracted from the real charm and empathy for the amateur golfer. Maybe its because the superstars are really not that interesting. I also detected a slight euro-phobe tendancy in the epilogue, come on John golfs bigger than that.
